The Pro‑Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Kayode Olubunmi Ojo, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to prioritise sweeping investment in higher education, warning that years of neglect have left the sector at breaking point.
Speaking at the university’s 54th convocation ceremony, Ojo described the decay in infrastructure as “enormous” and said only decisive federal action could reverse the decline. “The dearth of facilities is stifling development in our universities,” he said, stressing that without renewed funding for research, teaching, and innovation, Nigeria risked falling further behind its peers.
Ojo, who assumed office this year, struck an optimistic tone that UNN could emerge as a key beneficiary of Tinubu’s administration. He listed security, modern classrooms, and digital infrastructure as urgent needs, adding that the institution’s expanded admission quota required facilities to match. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, also present at the convocation, backed Ojo’s call, pledging federal support to “transform UNN with facilities befitting its reputation.” He said Tinubu’s government was committed to upgrading tertiary institutions nationwide.
