WAEC Review Confirms Earlier Errors

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has confirmed grading errors in this year’s English Language results and issued corrected scores after a nationwide outcry.

Israel Adebiyi, a student of Crowe Schools International in Iwo, Osun State, was among those affected. His English grade improved to C5 after WAEC re-evaluated the papers. Many students in Osun and other states had initially received abysmal marks in the subject, which was taken on the night of 28 May, following a delay to prevent alleged question leaks. After pressure from candidates, parents and the media, WAEC shut down its result portal on Thursday for a 24-hour review. Schools have since confirmed improved grades, with some students moving to B3 or C6.

The English Language is a compulsory pass for university admission in Nigeria. WAEC said on Monday that 38.32% of candidates passed English, but the figure has now risen to 62.96% after the correction, an increase of nearly 25 percentage points. WAEC’s country head, Amos Dagu, apologised on Friday, calling the error “very embarrassing” and attributing it to discrepancies in grading serialised papers.
