The Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Hajiya Aisha Garba, has shared the deep motivation behind her work: fixing Nigeria’s basic education system. She said her passion to make a real impact, not politics or money, drives her daily efforts.
Before UBEC, Aisha led the World Bank’s biggest global education project. Now in Nigeria, she says it is a chance to be the one implementing real change. “This is national service,” she said. “It is not about politics but purpose.”
She praised President Bola Tinubu and Education Minister Tunji Alausa for appointing her despite political pressure, saying their commitment to education under the Renewed Hope Agenda is genuine. With millions of Nigerian children still out of school or dropping out, Aisha says the statistics are worrying. However, she is hopeful and determined: “Every day I ask myself, how do I help solve this problem?” Her mission is clear: real change in basic education.
