For many young Nigerian researchers hoping to break into global science networks, opportunities have often felt out of reach. That changed recently after the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) became the first African government institution admitted into the World Association of Young Scientists (WAYS).
The decision, confirmed after WAYS’ annual plenary, places NASENI among more than 60 national science bodies shaping youth-driven research and international collaboration.
Established in 1992, NASENI now gains access to young scientists, research partnerships and funding streams that could support the commercialisation of technologies developed in Nigeria.
WAYS, a global organisation focused on youth-led solutions to climate change, food security and technological inequality, connects emerging researchers through exchanges, summits and its Sustainable Development Goals Award.
At the WAYS conference in Wenzhou, China, NASENI’s Executive Vice Chairman, Khalil Suleiman Halilu, said Nigeria’s growing work in renewable energy and green manufacturing shows the country is “a driving force for global sustainability”. He urged young Nigerians to see the platform as an opening to contribute to global innovation.
Halilu also announced ZeCo by NASENI, a clean-mobility and green-manufacturing initiative launching in 2026, and stressed the importance of adapting imported technologies to local needs.
WAYS Secretary-General Dr Meilin Zhang described NASENI’s admission as a signal that “Africa is ready to co-create solutions”. The move positions NASENI not just as a national agency but as a representative of African innovation on the global stage.
