Nigeria’s foremost faith-based charity organisation, Zakat and Sadaqat Foundation (ZSF), has disbursed over ₦60 million in zakat proceeds to beneficiaries across education, healthcare, and economic empowerment categories.
The disbursement ceremony, held at Hajj Mabrur Hall in Anthony Village, Lagos, formed part of the foundation’s activities, marking its 25th anniversary of mobilising zakat and sadaqah funds for humanitarian causes.
Welcoming guests, donors, and beneficiaries, the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation, Prince Sulaiman Olagunju, began his address by offering praises to Almighty Allah and salutations to the Prophet Muhammad (SAW). He expressed deep gratitude to all in attendance, stating that the event symbolised the foundation’s enduring commitment to social justice and support for the vulnerable.
Prince Olagunju reaffirmed the organisation’s mission as a bridge between the wealth of the fortunate and the needs of the less privileged. He noted that over the past 25 years, ZSF had championed equitable and impactful distribution of zakatzakat and sadaqah to address pressing societal needs.
Highlighting some of the foundation’s recent interventions, he cited the disbursement of ₦5.75 million to support 23 students at the University of Lagos, ₦10 million provided for 103 displaced persons in Maiduguri, and over ₦2 million worth of vocational tools — including tailoring machines, grinding machines, and deep freezers — distributed to 15 beneficiaries to promote sustainable livelihoods.
At the event, the foundation disbursed ₦8 million to support 40 students with educational expenses, and ₦37 million was allocated for medical assistance to 39 patients requiring critical care and surgical procedures.
Looking to the future, Prince Olagunju announced that the foundation aims to disburse over ₦500 million in zakatzakat before the end of the year, describing it as the organisation’s most ambitious commitment yet.
“As we celebrate 25 years of impact, I am pleased to announce that, by Allah’s grace and your continued support, we plan to disburse zakat worth over ₦500 million before the end of this year,” he said. “This will be a landmark in our journey to ensure that zakat truly reaches those for whom it is prescribed — in ways that uplift, empower, and restore dignity.”
He offered prayers for the beneficiaries and donors, expressing hope that the support provided would be a turning point in the lives of recipients. He also prayed that the contributions of donors would be accepted as acts of worship, bringing them increased wealth, health, and reward.
Quoting the Qur’anic verse, “Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them to increase…” (Surah At-Tawbah, 9:103), Prince Olagunju underscored the spiritual essence of zakat.
He concluded with a call to sustained commitment: “Zakat purifies, increases, and heals, both giver and receiver. Let us continue this noble path together. Let us make the next 25 years even more impactful than the first.”
