Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has approved a scholarship package worth over N730 million for students from the state studying in tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
The approval was announced on Thursday at the Ministry of Education’s Quality Assurance office in Maiduguri, where the cheque was presented to the Borno State Scholarship Board. The Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Lawan Abba Wakilbe, represented the governor at the ceremony.
Wakilbe said the scheme would benefit 26,888 undergraduates, with disbursement set to begin immediately. He added that the government had already spent over N8 Billion on scholarships in 2024, including funding for both local and overseas studies.
The commissioner advised students to confirm their bank details to avoid failed transactions and urged them also to explore the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND). “Education remains the strongest tool for empowerment in Borno State,” he said.
The National Union of Borno State Students (NUBOSS) welcomed the intervention. Its president, Abdullahi Ahmadu Umara, commended the governor’s support for student welfare.
