The prestigious Abeokuta Club has pledged full support to the newly established Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences (FUMMSA) in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The club hosted the pioneer Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Fatiu Arogundade, and his team on Friday, June 28, 2025.
The Acting President of the club, Alhaji Nurudeen Oyedele, described the university as a well-deserved gift from the Federal Government to the Egba people and the state of Ogun. He assured the Vice Chancellor that the club and the larger Egba community would provide a peaceful and supportive environment for the institution to grow.
Oyedele stated that the club had consistently participated in major development initiatives in the region and would continue this commitment by collaborating closely with the university. “We consider this medical university our own. The Egbas at home and abroad will stand by it,” he said. Professor Olusola Kehinde, Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture (FUNAAB) and a club member, revealed that FUNAAB has offered part of its campus for FUMMSA to begin operations. He described both universities as sister institutions.
In his remarks, Professor Arogundade expressed his honour at the warm welcome and assured the club of his collaboration. He shared that the university plans to begin with 20 academic programmes before the end of the year and has applied to the National Universities Commission (NUC) for course approvals. He also thanked the Ogun State Government for approving a model school in Oniganjangan to serve as a temporary Senate building. However, he called for more support to develop a permanent campus. The Vice Chancellor appealed to the club, individuals, and corporate bodies for help in funding infrastructure.
