Prof. Joel Ogbonna, Abia’s Commissioner for Petroleum and Mineral Resources
The Abia State Government has promised to deploy resources to repair the dilapidated roads at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO).
The commitment was made by Prof. Joel Ogbonna, Abia’s Commissioner for Petroleum and Mineral Resources, during the International Conference on Procurement, Environmental and Social Standards (ICPES 2025) held at the university.
Ogbonna expressed shock at the poor state of the university roads and assured that urgent action would be taken. He stressed that sustainable development and resilient livelihoods require collaboration among academia, government, industry, and civil society.
Vice-Chancellor of FUTO, Prof. Nnenna Oti, described universities as hubs of knowledge and innovation and called for procurement and social standards that reflect sustainability and climate resilience.
Conference organisers, including Prof. Gloria Chukwudebe and Prof. C.O. Nwoko, highlighted the need for long-term infrastructure planning, environmental protection, and social development to drive economic growth.
They emphasised that compliance with environmental and social standards, such as guaranteed road maintenance and monitoring of air and water quality, is essential to aligning Nigeria with global best practices.
