The Abia State Government has called on newly recruited teachers in the state to uphold high standards of professionalism and commitment in their work. This was made known by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Basic and Secondary Education, Kenechukwu Nwosu, during a two-day orientation programme held in Umuahia for the newly engaged teachers.
Speaking to journalists after the event, Nwosu said that the only way teachers can show appreciation for Governor Alex Otti’s support is by making a positive impact in the classroom and ensuring that pupils receive a quality education. “The government has made education free and compulsory at the primary and junior secondary levels to improve literacy and support the development of the state,” he said.
He emphasised that the administration has zero tolerance for corruption and is committed to raising the standard of education in Abia. He praised the teachers for attending the orientation and encouraged them to take their roles seriously. Speaking on behalf of the teachers, Cyracuse Eze thanked the government for the opportunity to serve and promised that they would do their best to support the state’s educational goals.
The Otti-led administration has embarked on a significant recruitment drive in the sector. So far, 5,395 teachers have been officially hired, with plans underway to engage up to 9,000 in total. The orientation programme is part of the state’s efforts to equip the new teachers with the right mindset, skills, and knowledge needed to succeed in the classroom and help rebuild the education system in Abia.
