Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, reports that it has spent approximately ₦2 billion on electricity in recent months, underscoring the urgent need for sustainable power solutions.
Speaking at the launch of the ABU Energy and Innovation Challenge (ABUEIC) on Tuesday, Vice-Chancellor Professor Adamu Ahmed stated that the initiative aims to address the University’s long-standing energy issues through practical, homegrown solutions developed by students, staff, and alumni.
“The University has relied for too long on external interventions to address its energy problems. It is now time for action,” he said.
Professor Ahmed added that several committees have already helped reduce electricity costs by curbing energy wastage on campus.
The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) also supported the University, donating 450 solar streetlights. Dr Bala Tyoden, representing the agency, said ABU is a “catalyst for progress” in the drive to expand electricity access to underserved areas.
Experts at the event urged the University to explore public-private partnerships and leverage local innovation to meet its energy needs.
Professor S. A. Jonah, Director of the Centre for Energy Research and Training, stressed that prioritising energy research is critical for both the University and Nigeria’s development.
The initiative brings together academics, industry experts, and stakeholders to identify sustainable pathways for energy efficiency and reduce the University’s reliance on costly external power sources.
