ABU Memo Secures Historic Boost for Food Security

A historic milestone has been achieved by the Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR) at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, as the National Council on Agriculture and Food Security (NCAFS) approved an IAR memorandum for the first time in the Council’s history. The announcement was made during the 47th regular meeting of the Council held on November 3 2025, in Kaduna.

Titled “Strengthening National Food Security through Scaling of IAR’s Improved Crop Varieties and Climate-Smart Technologies,” the memo was presented by IAR Deputy Director, Prof. Nafiu Abdu, on behalf of Executive Director, Prof. Ado Yusuf. It received high praise for its forward-looking approach and potential to transform Nigeria’s agricultural productivity.

The approval recognises IAR’s pioneering work in developing improved crop varieties and climate-smart solutions, aimed at enhancing farmer livelihoods, promoting sustainable agriculture, and supporting the nation’s broader food security agenda.

For IAR, the endorsement reflects not only institutional credibility but also the dedication of its scientists and management to strengthening national food systems. Federal and agricultural stakeholders commended the initiative, highlighting its strategic importance for Nigeria’s agricultural transformation.

The memorandum’s ratification marks a defining moment for the Institute, signalling growing confidence in homegrown research solutions as Nigeria seeks resilient, innovative approaches to feed its population.
