In an effort to address climate pressures and bolster Nigeria’s national food systems, stakeholders are embracing agroecology as a practical, climate-resilient approach to sustainable farming. The Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR) at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, has taken the lead in hosting a two-day hands-on workshop designed to equip farmers, extension officers, and policy actors with the knowledge to enhance soil health and crop productivity.
Under the theme “Best Agroecological Practices as a Climate-Smart Strategy for Soil Health and Sustainable Crop Production,” experts highlighted methods such as crop rotation, organic inputs, and reduced chemical dependency to improve long-term soil fertility. Sessions also explored climate adaptation strategies and socio-economic factors influencing the adoption of sustainable practices.
Prof. Ado A. Yusuf, IAR Executive Director, stressed the urgency of adopting agroecology to address climate-related threats, urging participants to disseminate insights to their communities. Representatives from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security reaffirmed the government’s commitment to initiatives that enhance resilience, promote soil health, and bolster national food security.
Practical demonstrations on composting and soil management are scheduled to deepen participants’ understanding, ensuring that Nigeria’s agricultural future is anchored in sustainable, climate-smart practices that balance productivity with environmental stewardship.
