The School of Basic and Remedial Studies (SBRS) at Ahmadu Bello University has organised a career talk for secondary schools in the Zaria metropolis. The event took place today, Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at Alhudahuda College, Zaria.
In his opening remarks, Dr Sanusi Gambo, Director of the School of Basic and Remedial Studies (SBRS), stated that the school deemed it necessary to organise the career talk due to the growth in misunderstandings about career choices among secondary school students over the years.
Dr Gambo stated that it became necessary to give back by addressing the challenge of choosing career paths by bringing experienced paper presenters to enlighten the students.
The Director stated that SBRS had, over the years, guided students in preparation for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). In his paper titled “Emerging Trends and Opportunities for Science-Oriented Students in the 21st Century”, Dr Abubakar Abubakar Khaleed of the Department of Physics, Ahmadu Bello University, listed some transformations that had brought about new career opportunities.
Dr Khaleed identified artificial intelligence, digital transformation, globalisation, climate change, cybersecurity, aerospace communication, and public health as some of the science-related career opportunities of the 21st Century. According to him, such transformations had created new disciplines, including robotics, biotechnology and genetic engineering, solar and hydroelectric energy, space science and satellite technology, cybersecurity, the digital economy, and numerous others. He encouraged students to master technical skills, foster creativity, and remain committed to lifelong learning, regardless of their background, to excel in their chosen fields of study.
