The Adamawa State government has announced that only secondary school students with at least 75% attendance and who pass the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and National Examinations Council (NECO) mock examinations will be eligible to sit the main examinations.
The policy was announced by Garba Pella, Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, during an emergency meeting with school principals from 21 local government areas in Yola on Friday.
Pella said the move is aimed at encouraging students to take their studies seriously, following disappointing NECO results in 2025. He warned principals against registering external candidates for senior secondary school examinations, noting that some had done so to receive government funds, despite the state covering examination fees to ease parents’ financial burden. The commissioner also urged principals to take ownership of government facilities and continue serving as role models for students. Dahiru Abubakar, President of the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS) in Adamawa, called for a responsibility allowance for school principals.
