Prof Ahmad Ladan Ala, Sokoto State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, has queried the principals of Government Secondary School (GSS) Tureta and Junior Secondary School (JSS) Bissalam over absenteeism, lax supervision, and poor staff and student attendance.
The disciplinary action followed an unscheduled monitoring exercise carried out by the commissioner on Tuesday across selected schools in the state, including JSS Gidan Gara, GSS Amanawa, JSS Bissalam, and GSS Tureta.
At GSS Tureta, Ala expressed disappointment after discovering that the principal was absent from duty and only three out of 23 teachers were present. A similar situation was observed at JSS Bissalam, where poor attendance among both staff and students was recorded. In his remarks, the commissioner condemned the neglect of duty and described the findings as unacceptable.
“Dedication, accountability, and effective supervision are essential to delivering quality education. School heads must take their responsibilities seriously. We will not tolerate negligence in our public schools,” he said.
Ala warned that the state government would continue to enforce discipline and hold school leaders accountable for lapses in performance.
Among the commissioner’s entourage for the inspection were senior ministry officials, including Abubakar Umar Salame, Director of Administration; Abdulkadir Umar Alkammawa, Director of Quality Assurance; and Muhammad Sani Usman, Director of Quality Assurance at the Arabic Board.
