Outgoing President of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA), Arc. Mobolaji Adeniyi says the architectural sector contributes N6.17 trillion to Nigeria’s GDP annually, accounting for roughly 6% of national output.
Adeniyi spoke at the Institute’s 65th Biennial General Assembly in Abuja, emphasising that no developing economy thrives without strong architectural input.
He noted that the profession drives large-scale employment across the built environment and pointed to Dubai as a benchmark for how architectural excellence can catalyse tourism and economic expansion.
He stated that the sector’s impact is evident across global economies, noting that architecture remains a core engine of growth. Adeniyi also addressed recurring building collapses in Nigeria, urging governments, builders and developers to engage only certified professionals. According to him, projects led by registered architects significantly reduce structural risks.
Incoming President Sani Saulawa reinforced this position, stressing that no collapse incident has involved NIA members. He warned unlicensed practitioners against taking on architectural roles without the required training or capacity, describing the practice as a major contributor to structural failures. Saulawa said the Institute will intensify advocacy to ensure stakeholders comply with ethical and professional standards.
