Students of Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike (AE-FUNAI), have participated in a workshop designed to provide them with practical exposure to public finance and policy-making.
The training, held in partnership with the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), focused on budget analysis, evidence-based policy-making and Nigeria’s wider fiscal system.
Opening the event, the Vice-Chancellor, represented by Professor Kalu Uma, said the workshop was an essential step in helping students connect classroom learning with real-world governance. He praised the department for prioritising practical knowledge and noted that the sessions would be helpful for those aspiring to careers in public service.
NILDS Director-General Professor Abubakar Sulaiman, represented by Dr Augustine Osigwe, said the collaboration was aimed at closing the gap between academic research and policy practice. He told students that budgets are not just numbers but tools that shape national development, stressing the need for evidence-based analysis as the government prepares the 2026 Appropriation Bill.
Presentations covered Nigeria’s budget laws, the role of the National Assembly, and techniques for analysing revenue, expenditure and debt.
The Head of Department, Dr Anuli Ogbuagu, said the initiative would strengthen engagement between scholars and practitioners. The event ended with awards to NILDS resource persons for their contributions.
