Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike (AE-FUNAI) has organised a capacity-building workshop for postgraduate supervisors to improve supervision, research quality, and timely graduation.
The workshop, hosted by the School of Postgraduate Studies, highlighted contemporary skills in mentorship, integrity, health management, and innovative supervision practices.
Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Sunday O. Abonyi stressed the need for systemic reforms, improved resources, and collaboration between supervisors and students to overcome institutional and individual challenges delaying postgraduate completion.
Key speakers included Prof Chukwunonso E.C.C. Ejike, who urged supervisors to uphold ethical research practices, and Dr Peter C. Okoli, who highlighted the potential of virtual supervision to extend guidance and recommended hybrid models to balance digital and in-person interactions.
Rev. Prof Lawrence U. Ogbonnaya emphasised the importance of supervisors’ health and wellness to effective postgraduate mentorship. At the same time, Prof A.C. Okorocha stated the importance of fostering trust, communication and mutual respect between supervisors and students.
The workshop provided practical strategies and tools to strengthen supervisory relationships, enhance research integrity and ensure timely postgraduate graduation.
