Afe Babalola Urges NUC to Close Down Universities

Aare Afe Babalola, the founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti

Aare Afe Babalola, the founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), has urged the National Universities Commission (NUC) to shut down illegal and substandard private universities in Nigeria.

Babalola made the call while welcoming the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria Accreditation Team to ABUAD. He stressed that the NUC should revisit its accreditation process, noting that Nigeria deserves the best in higher education and should not entertain inadequacies.

In addition, he stated that NUC used to conduct prior visits to universities’ permanent sites before approval, further encouraging them to reinstate this process and close down the substandard ones.

Highlighting facts about ABUAD, he said, “ABUAD is a not-for-profit private university where nobody has shares. Whatever extra money is made is always ploughed back into the university. According to the World Bank, the three objectives of a university properly so called are: quality teaching, quality research, and community service. We are proud that we have been excelling in all three parameters.”
