AMCRON Hosts Conference on AI, Media, Democracy

Prof. Eserinune McCarty Mojaye, AMCRON President

Scholars, media practitioners and policymakers will converge at the University of Lagos, Akoka, from December 3-4, 2025, for the 5th International Academic Conference and Annual General Meeting of the Association of Media and Communication Researchers of Nigeria (AMCRON). The conference carries the theme “Issues in Artificial Intelligence: The Media and Democracy.”

The event will feature speakers from academia, industry, and government, and is open to researchers, journalists, and social scientists. It aims to examine AI’s impact on media practices, democratic engagement, and civic participation.
AMCRON President Prof Eserinune McCarty Mojaye highlighted the conference as a platform to explore AI-driven innovations in news production, audience engagement, and content distribution, while addressing challenges such as misinformation, algorithmic bias, deepfakes, and erosion of public trust.

Dr Kehinde Oyesomi, South West Zone Coordinator, said the event will foster dialogue, share research findings, and develop actionable strategies for responsible AI adoption.
Sub-themes include AI in political communication, media literacy, data ethics, surveillance, and inclusive public discourse. The conference notes the need to balance technological progress with democratic accountability and ethical media practices.

The opening ceremony is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 3, 2025. The gathering is expected to provide critical insights into leveraging AI to strengthen Nigeria’s media sector and democratic institutions.
