The AMIR Fund for Education, Science, and Technology has endowed a new fund at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) to support biomedical and oncology research.
Through FirstBank Trustees, the fund will strengthen Prof. Adebayo Shittu’s Laboratory in the Department of Microbiology and provide annual research fellowships for master’s and PhD students studying molecular biology and oncology.
AMIR Fund founder Ridwan Sorunke, an OAU alumnus, said the initiative is a way of giving back to the university and building local research capacity. “This fund will ensure our brightest minds have the resources they need to excel in scientific research,” he said.
OAU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Adebayo Bamire welcomed the initiative, describing it as vital for advancing innovation in the university. Prof. Shittu added that the fund will significantly improve the department’s work, inspiring a stronger culture of research and discovery in Nigeria. The AMIR Fund plans more initiatives to continue supporting scientific development in Nigerian universities.
