ASUU-UI Awards ₦1.1m Scholarships to 11 Indigent Students

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ibadan chapter, has awarded ₦1.1 million in scholarships to 11 indigent students for the 2024/2025 academic session.

The beneficiaries were selected from over 100 applicants through a competitive process that included screening and interviews. Two students received ₦200,000 each from the National ASUU, while five others got ₦100,000 each from the UI branch. An additional ₦50,000 each was donated to four students by Professor Tajudeen Àkànjí of the UI chapter.

ASUU-UI Chairman, Dr Adefemi Afolabi, said the union remains committed to supporting underprivileged students despite persistent challenges such as withheld salaries and the federal government’s failure to finalise a new agreement with the union. He described the scholarship as an investment in the future, intended to foster empathy and a culture of giving back among recipients.

Speaking on behalf of the ASUU Ibadan Zone, ASUU LAUTECH Chairman Olujimi Dada reiterated that ASUU’s commitment extends beyond staff welfare to improving public education in Nigeria. The award ceremony was held at the ASUU-UI Secretariat in Ibadan. Beneficiaries included students from the Pharmacy, Medicine, Economics, and Nursing programmes.
