Babcock University has signed a five-year partnership with Sycom Integrated Solutions, a UK-based cybersecurity firm, to strengthen practical training and industry collaboration in digital security.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed on September 18, will provide students with access to a new cyber laboratory, joint courses taught in collaboration with Sycom, and opportunities for both local and international internships. Faculty exchange visits to Sycom’s UK headquarters are also planned.
The programme, described as the first of its kind in Nigeria, will be compulsory for cybersecurity students, with options open to those in related fields such as IT, computer science and software engineering.
Babcock Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ademola Tayo, called the agreement a “game changer,” adding: “Cybersecurity is no longer a luxury but a response to a real threat.”
The Dean of Computing Science, Professor Adewale Adebayo, stated that the partnership would help produce graduates ready to work as consultants. At the same time, Sycom’s Chief Executive, Abdulraman Akanbi, noted that it would bridge the gap between academia and industry.
The initiative is expected to position Babcock as a leader in cybersecurity education and contribute to national efforts to counter digital threats, which are projected to cost $10.5 trillion globally by the end of 2025.
