The Bauchi State Government has begun producing exercise books and chalk locally for public schools, aiming to enhance educational quality and promote self-reliance.
The initiative, announced by Commissioner for Education Muhammed Lawal during an inspection of the production facility at the Bauchi State Education Resource Centre (ERC) on Friday, is part of broader efforts to improve teaching materials and rebrand textbooks for higher quality and appeal.
“Today marks a significant milestone as exercise books are now being produced locally in Bauchi State, under the supervision of the Ministry of Education and with the full support of His Excellency, Governor Bala Mohammed,” Lawal said.
He added that producing materials in-house would reduce reliance on external vendors and ensure students receive quality products, avoiding substandard supplies from contractors.
Lawal also highlighted plans to expand production beyond the state, exploring potential export opportunities. “Once local demand is met, we will explore export opportunities for our chalk and other materials. This initiative has strong economic prospects,” he said.
Mr Kabiru Ahmed, Director of the Education Resource Centre, praised staff for their dedication, describing the facility as a key component of the administration’s drive to revamp the education sector and improve learning outcomes across Bauchi State.
This move positions Bauchi as one of the first states in Nigeria to invest in the local production of essential school materials.
