The bill to give legal backing to the Federal University of Technology, Ikot Abasi (FUTIA), will soon be passed by the National Assembly, according to Senator Ekong Sampson, who represents Akwa Ibom South.
Sampson, Deputy Chairman of the Senate Committee on Education, confirmed that the bill has already scaled through the first, second, and third readings. He assured that once signed into law, the university would gain full legal status to operate and expand its programmes.
The senator spoke during the commissioning of several projects in Eket and Ikot Abasi, including a 500KVA transformer, a new CBT/ICT building at St. Francis Secondary School, and the flag-off of medical facilities.
He explained that the ICT centre aligns with WAEC’s plan to adopt computer-based testing, ensuring that students in the area are well-prepared.
Stakeholders say FUTIA’s legal recognition will boost access to science and technology education in Akwa Ibom and across Nigeria.
