Prof. Femi Ayoade of Redeemer’s University, Ede, has urged Nigeria to leverage biotechnology to tackle hunger, disease, and poverty, describing it as a transformative tool for national development.
Speaking at the university’s 20th inaugural lecture, titled “Biotechnology as Divine Providence: A New Paradigm for Sustainable Development and Poverty Alleviation”, Ayoade said the technology offers solutions to food insecurity, poor healthcare, and environmental challenges.
He noted that Nigeria’s biotechnology potential remains largely untapped due to weak funding, poor infrastructure, unclear policies, and low public awareness. Despite these obstacles, the country’s youthful population, agricultural base, and growing research capacity present significant opportunities.
Ayoade stressed the need to integrate entrepreneurship into biotechnology training to create jobs, new industries, and opportunities for youth. He called on policymakers to enact supportive regulations, provide research incentives, and strengthen academia-industry collaboration.
“Through research, policy advocacy, and practical applications, biotechnology can drive transformational change in Nigeria and across Africa,” he said, urging steady investment and ethical practices.
Ayoade also commended Redeemer’s University for fostering a research-friendly environment and encouraged continued dialogue on advancing biotechnology for socio-economic growth.
