The University of Uyo has received a British Council-funded grant to advance Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Nigeria’s construction industry.
The one-year project, carried out in partnership with Edinburgh Napier University, aims to improve inclusiveness and employability by using digital technologies to modernise training.
Speaking at a press briefing, Professor Emmanuel Akpabio, Director of the university’s Directorate of International Programmes, said the initiative would address the sector’s growing reliance on digital tools such as Building Information Modelling, artificial intelligence and sustainability practices.
He said the programme would equip trainees with practical skills, foster innovation, and strengthen collaboration between academia and the construction industry. Activities will include a “train-the-trainer” workshop in Uyo scheduled for 14–17 October 2025, as well as exchange visits to the UK.
Akpabio described the grant as a milestone for the university, crediting its rising research reputation and the support of Vice-Chancellor Nyaudo Ndaeyo. He also praised the British Council for fostering international partnerships. “This project will prepare students for real-world challenges while creating a skilled workforce to support Nigeria’s economic growth,” Akpabio said.
