BUK celebrates its 4th induction ceremony for graduates of the Doctor of Optometry programme
Bayero University, Kano, has celebrated its fourth induction ceremony for graduates of the Doctor of Optometry programme from the Department of Optometry, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences.
Prof. Idris Mohammed Yahaya, the provost of the College of Health Sciences, stated that BUK is the pioneer institution to run a Doctor of Optometry programme, describing the induction as a milestone.
While administering the oath, Dr Obinna Edwin Awiaka, the Registrar of the Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Registration Board of Nigeria (ODORBN), encouraged the 55 Inductees to maintain integrity, professionalism, and ethical conduct as they discharge their duties.
Highlighting the growing need for optometry amid rising global eye health challenges, he noted that research shows that nearly half of the world’s population will become myopic by 2025.
He explained that this stems from the heavy use of mobile phones and computers across all age groups, thereby calling for the establishment of specialised eye centres.
