As far back as 1955, a small school with only five pupils opened its doors in Ikoyi, Lagos, called Corona Day Nursery. It. It started because one woman, Mrs Anne MacDonald, believed that every child—no matter their race—deserved a good education. Today, Corona Schools is 70 years old and has become one of the most respected schools in Nigeria.
The school was first supported by the Corona Women’s Society and donations from kind Nigerians. From just one class in a kitchen, more children joined, and more Corona schools were opened in places like Ebute-Metta, Gbagada, and Lekki. Today, 70 years after the dream was born, Corona has become one of the most recognised education brands in Nigeria. Corona now has nursery, primary, secondary, and teacher training schools across Lagos and Ogun States.
All over Nigeria and beyond, the Corona school is known for its high standard of learning, discipline, and well-rounded education. Former students of the school include notable figures such as Professor Yemi Osinbajo, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, and the musician Burna Boy. Many alumni recently gathered in Lagos for a big dinner to celebrate their time at the school and share memories. A great deal has changed since the school began seven decades ago. Corona Schools now has digital classrooms, green playgrounds, and a new tech hub where students can learn about computers and science. The school also helps children from poor homes with scholarships and free learning programmes.
