Corps Members Sue Anambra Government for Assault, Demand N1bn

Six members of the National Youth Service Corps have dragged the Anambra State Government to court, demanding ₦1 billion in damages for alleged assault and unlawful detention by the state’s vigilante group, Agunechemba.

The corps members, Jennifer Elohor, Greatness Oyeh, Eze Ikenna, Anighoro Godspower, Feyisara Amore, and Chimenum Wonodi, filed the suit at the Federal High Court, Awka.

Their case follows a viral August video showing vigilante operatives invading their lodge and brutalising them. One victim, Elohor, was reportedly stripped naked and beaten despite showing her NYSC identification.

Through their lawyer, Cyrus Onu, the corps members listed the Anambra State Government, Governor Chukwuma Soludo, the State Attorney-General and the vigilante group as respondents.

They are seeking ₦1 billion compensation for physical and emotional trauma and a court declaration that their arrest and torture were illegal. They also want a written public apology published in at least two national newspapers and one local outlet.
