The Cross River State Government has intensified efforts to revamp its educational sector by launching a decisive crackdown on illegal schools across the state, alongside a fresh initiative aimed at integrating agriculture into academic learning.
During a recent State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Bassey Otu, the state directed the Ministry of Education to commence immediate closure of all unapproved and unaccredited schools.
The move, according to Commissioner for Information Dr. Erasmus Ekpang, is part of a broader plan to restore confidence in the state’s education system, ensure compliance with academic standards, and uphold quality assurance.
Complementing the education reforms is a ₦700 million subsidy for Arabica and Robusta coffee seedlings to be distributed to smallholder farmers.
While primarily an agricultural boost, the intervention is also expected to support curriculum-driven agribusiness education and promote skills acquisition in sustainable farming, particularly for students in technical and vocational schools.
By linking classroom learning with practical economic ventures like coffee farming, the state aims to equip young people with relevant knowledge that fosters both academic growth and long-term employability.
