Following the killing of a guest at a student-organised programme, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has placed restrictions on campus social events, barring all gatherings from continuing beyond 6 p.m.
Mr Inya Egwu, the Acting Public Relations Officer of the institution, disclosed this in a statement, adding that the directive was aimed at strengthening security and preventing similar tragedies from recurring.
The move comes after the death of businessman Chiebonam Nweze, popularly known as Power-Autos, who was fatally stabbed on September 12 during a bonfire night organised by the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies.
According to the university, the event, initially intended as a harmless student celebration, was infiltrated by miscreants from a nearby community who caused violence, resulting in the deadly incident.
“In light of what happened, management has directed that all social events on campus must now take place only in the daytime, under the supervision of the University Security Unit. No event of this nature will be allowed to continue past 6:00 p.m. on any of our campuses,” the statement read in part
While the university described the stabbing as “tragic and avoidable,” it assured students, staff, and the public that it is committed to creating a safer environment for academic and social life.
