The siting of the newly established DUFUTH College of Health Technology (CHT) at Onuoguduedu, Amaechi Okposi, Ebonyi State, has garnered mixed reactions following its groundbreaking ceremony on October 27, 2025.
While some residents commended the move as a step toward decentralising health education, others accused the project’s promoters, Prof Uzoma Agwu and Josiah Aja, of sidelining the Uburu community, where the parent institution, David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital (DUFUTH), is located.
Supporters of the project have dismissed the criticism as baseless, noting that colleges of health technology are typically located outside tertiary hospital environments. They cited similar arrangements at UNTH Ituku-Ozalla and AEFUTHA Abakaliki, which operate separate health training institutions away from their leading hospitals.
They explained that establishing the college in Okposi aligns with National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) standards and allows for independent funding, programme expansion, and private-sector collaboration.
Observers noted that the decision would promote regional development and cooperation between the Uburu and Okposi communities, while strengthening DUFUTH’s capacity to serve the wider Ohaozara area and the entire state of Ebonyi.
