The Class of ’81 of Government Secondary School (GSS) Owerri has reaffirmed its commitment to youth development and educational excellence during the fifth edition of the STARs’ Awards, held to mark the school’s Old Boys Association’s 90th anniversary.
The event, themed “The Can-Do Spirit,” celebrated the achievements of students who participated in the STARs’ Learning and Development Programme, a mentorship initiative designed to inspire and equip secondary and tertiary students with leadership, research, problem-solving and time-management skills.
Programme Coordinator, Emeka Mba, said the initiative has impacted over 1,350 students through mentorship, ICT workshops and career coaching, with support from corporate partners across multiple industries.
Class Captain, Iyke Babajide Ezeji, described the programme as “a legacy framework for incubating Nigeria’s next generation of leaders.”
Representing the State Ministry of Education, Mrs Augustina Azubuike praised the alumni for sustaining the programme, noting that many beneficiaries have continued to excel academically.
The event drew over 350 guests, including industry leaders, educators and government officials, who lauded the alumni’s commitment to fostering excellence and preparing young Nigerians for global relevance.
