Enugu State Champions a New Era of Education

In Enugu State, the classroom is undergoing a quiet revolution. Under the leadership of Peter Mbah, the state government has launched an ambitious plan to provide every child, regardless of their location, with access to a world-class education.

Traditionally, the Nigerian education sector has faced significant challenges. Funding has been scarce, classrooms are outdated, and the curriculum is often obsolete. Many young people leave school unprepared for the jobs of the future. However, Enugu is flipping the script.

The state is championing three big ideas: learning by doing (experiential learning), making sure all children have equal access, and boosting technical and vocational education.

What does that mean on the ground? It means new schools are being built in every ward—260 Smart Green Schools in total —so that each community has a modern facility. These schools will feature digital whiteboards, tablets, robotics, artificial intelligence tools, and virtual reality setups. The goal is for children to learn not just facts, but how to think creatively, solve problems and build things.

Alongside the infrastructure, teachers are being trained in new teaching methods. In 2025 alone, more than 18,000 teachers have undergone training in digital literacy and interactive pedagogy. That helps move learning away from “repeat after me” to “let us do it together”.

Importantly, Enugu’s reform does not leave anyone behind. From early childhood education to inclusive learning for children with disabilities, the focus is on giving all children a fair start. At the same time, the state is linking education to jobs by strengthening technical and vocational schools. Soon, graduates will not just hold certificates; they will hold skills.

What stands out is the significant amount of money being committed. The government has allocated over 30% of its budget to education, a rate well above international benchmarks. This signals seriousness.

For Nigerians watching, there is a valuable lesson to be learned here: high ambition backed by funds, reaching into every community, and combining technology with human development. If the work continues, Enugu may not just change itself—you might say it is lighting a path for other states.

In this era, when the world of work is shifting too rapidly for many to keep up, Enugu’s message is clear: education must change as well. Moreover, it must change now.
