ERC Slams Students Over Dangote Protest

The Education Rights Campaign (ERC), Oyo State Chapter, has frowned on the National Association of Oduduwa Students (NAOS), which recently held a protest in support of the Dangote Refinery. The protest, which took place in Ibadan on October 7, 2025, backed the refinery’s management amid a dispute with oil workers’ unions over the sack of 800 employees who reportedly joined trade unions.

In a statement signed by its State Coordinator, Nnamdi Ochi, the ERC described the protest as a “misplaced priority” and “a regrettable diversion” from the real challenges facing Nigerian students.

Ochi stressed that instead of defending a private company that is allegedly involved in anti-worker practices, students should focus on fighting for better education funding, affordable tuition, and improved school facilities.

He added that Nigerian students are struggling with high fees, poor accommodation, and outdated infrastructure. These issues, he said, deserve urgent attention rather than misplaced solidarity with corporate interests
