Students of the Lagos State College of Health Technology have given the institution’s management 48 hours to reverse a recent tuition fee increase or face mass protests.
The ultimatum, issued recently, was contained in a statement signed by the Students’ Union Government (SUG) president, Akolade Omotuyi, and general secretary, Favour Animashaun.
The union described the increment as “unacceptable,” adding that the resolution was adopted at a congress meeting attended by representatives from the relevant departments.
According to the statement, leaders from eight departments, including Environmental Health Technology, Health Information Technology, Medical Laboratory Technology, Pharmacy Technology, and Community Health Extension, endorsed the decision. Others were Biomedical Technology, Complementary Health and Alternative Medicine, and Morbid Sciences.
The students warned that if the school authorities fail to reverse the decision within two days, they would embark on peaceful but sustained demonstrations that could disrupt academic activities.
They further criticised the increase as “unfair” and “insensitive,” saying it imposes an additional burden of more than ₦50,000 on students, far beyond what many families can afford under current economic conditions.
The union also accused the college of charging for services that were never provided in the previous academic session, describing the policy as unjustifiable.
Fee hikes have become common in Nigerian tertiary institutions, with universities such as UNILAG, UNIBEN, ABU, and the University of Abuja implementing similar policies in recent sessions.
