Eminent Nigerians, academics, and policymakers have renewed calls for urgent reforms in the nation’s education system to make it more proactive and responsive to present and future challenges.
The appeal was made at a colloquium in Abuja to mark the 60th birthday of Professor Muhammad Akaro Mainoma, former Vice Chancellor of Nasarawa State University, Keffi. The event also doubled as a platform to reflect on Nigeria’s development path and Mainoma’s contributions to academia and leadership.
Delivering the keynote address, Dr Umar Bindir, former Director-General of NOTAP, decried Nigeria’s failure to fully harness its intellectual and human resources for national growth. He argued that without strategic reforms, the education sector would continue to produce graduates who lack basic skills and are not ready for the demands of the labour market.
Speakers at the colloquium stressed that aligning education with innovation, skills, and development goals is critical to Nigeria’s development.
