Nursing experts have raised an alarm over the poor level of research in Nigeria’s nursing education system, warning that the situation could affect the quality of future healthcare professionals.
They made this known at the Undergraduate Nursing Research Summit and Award Ceremony in Lagos, organised by the Golden Lamp Leadership Initiative Africa. The yearly event seeks to promote research culture among nursing students across Nigerian universities.
Prof. Omolola Irinoye, Vice Chancellor of Achievers University, Owo, said many nursing students lack proper research training, which weakens their postgraduate studies and professional growth. She urged universities to strengthen research foundations in nursing departments.
Convener of the event, Mrs Oluyemisi Otitoloju, stressed the importance of mentoring young nurses to engage in evidence-based practice, saying this will improve healthcare delivery.
Experts at the summit agreed that universities, professional bodies, and the government need to take action to promote research and support innovation in nursing education.
