The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), FCT Chapter, has urged striking Area Council workers to return to work as talks continue to address their demands.
Dr John Gabaya, Secretary of FCT ALGON and Bwari Area Council Chairman, said at a press briefing in Abuja that all Area Council Chairmen have started paying the new national minimum wage.
He acknowledged some issues, including unpaid salary arrears, but encouraged dialogue to resolve them.
Meanwhile, Hon. Danladi Chiya, FCT ALGON Chairman and Kwali Area Council Chairman, appealed directly to the striking teachers to return to the classrooms, warning them that the strike would harm the students’ education.
He praised the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, for his active role in resolving the crisis and assured that the chairmen remain committed to improving the welfare and conditions of workers.
Now in its third week, the strike has disrupted key services in all six FCT area councils. Residents are growing increasingly concerned, calling for a quick solution.
The FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, had summoned the six Area Council Chairmen three weeks ago to discuss the strike by primary school teachers, triggered by delays in the payment of entitlements and the implementation of the new minimum wage.
On May 12, 2025, Wike announced a plan to deduct 10% from the statutory allocation to the FCT Area Councils for failing to pay the new minimum wage to primary school teachers.
Speaking to the press in Abuja, Wike expressed his frustration over the strike’s negative impact on children’s education in the Federal Capital Territory.
