Students from six public junior secondary schools in Abuja gathered at the National Library for a literacy competition focused on spelling, writing, and story reviews. The event, organised by the Network of Book Clubs and Reading Promoters (NBRP), aimed to boost reading culture among students—many of whom come from schools without libraries.
NBRP Abuja Coordinator, Lawrence Oloowokere, said the contest helps students build confidence and expand their reading abilities. He noted that the project targets 500 to 1,000 schools in the FCT and supports them with books, teacher training, and reading clubs.
Oye Margaret, who is from the National Library, praised the initiative, adding that it will help young people to think critically, express themselves, and also grow intellectually. She reminded students that “readers today become leaders tomorrow.” Students were encouraged to continue reading beyond the competition. Despite short notice, schools like JSS Mabushi still showed up and participated actively in the event.
