The Federal Government has launched a $552m project aimed at supporting the country’s education sector. The Human Capital Opportunities for Prosperity and Equity (HOPE) project, co-financed by the World Bank and the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), focuses on improving the quality of education, expanding access to quality education, and strengthening education systems across all states.
The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, disclosed this in a post on the X platform on Tuesday.
Alausa explained that the project, unveiled at the inaugural meeting of the National Steering Committee, is expected to benefit 29 million children, 500,000 public school teachers, 65,000 public schools, and 10,000 non-formal learning centres. He noted that the programme places special emphasis on foundational learning, teacher professional development, data and digitalisation, and reducing the number of out-of-school children.
According to Alausa, the HOPE initiative exemplifies President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to human capital development, particularly in education, health, and social protection. He added that the project is part of the broader federal government initiatives aimed at unlocking significant demographic dividends for the Nigerian people. “On Monday, we held the inaugural meeting of the National Steering Committee for the Human Capital Opportunities for Prosperity and Equity (#HOPE) project, which includes HOPE-Education, HOPE-Health, and HOPE-Gov.
“The Steering Committee comprises the Minister of Budget, Senator @atikuabagudu; the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, @FinMinNigeria; the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare (CMHSW), Prof. @muhammadpate; myself, @NigEducation; and the three National Programme Coordinators. The HOPE series of programmes will be catalytic to broader federal government initiatives.
“In this regard, the Honourable Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, @hm_womenaffairs, was also in attendance to ensure inclusive participation and synergy from the outset. “This HOPE initiative further exemplifies President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR’s, unwavering belief in human capital development—particularly in education, health, and social protection. The President remains deeply committed to advancing these investments to unlock significant demographic dividends for the Nigerian people.
“We are building a nation where young Nigerians are well-educated, have access to quality healthcare, and are empowered to become a strong and productive workforce,” the minister posted.
