The federal government has introduced an Accelerated Basic Education (ABE) programme to help over 80 million out-of-school children and adults in Nigeria gain access to basic education. This new plan aims to close learning gaps and support national development quickly.
Suwaiba Ahmad, Minister of State for Education, revealed this during a national meeting on youth and adult literacy in Abuja. Represented by her technical assistant, Claris Ujam, she said the programme would provide flexible learning across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, focusing on teaching people in their local communities.
The government says the ABE programme will help young people and adults who missed out on school due to poverty, displacement, or early dropout. The Federal Government also described the ABE programme as a national movement that removes age and location as barriers to learning. While the vision has been shared, complete details about funding, structure, and rollout are yet to be released.
