Federal Government Moves to Stop ASUU Strike, Approves N150bn

The Federal Government has launched a new effort to stop the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) from going on another nationwide strike.

Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, said President Bola Tinubu has ordered that every step be taken to keep students in school and end recurring disruptions in the university calendar.

Alausa explained that a reconstituted negotiation committee has been set up to engage ASUU and other unions, while the government has also made financial commitments to address their key concerns.

He revealed that President Tinubu approved N150 billion in the 2025 budget to be released in three phases to improve lecturers’ welfare and settle part of the union’s demands.

The minister also assured that all outstanding arrears, including the 25 per cent wage award, will be cleared by 2026. He appealed to ASUU to suspend its planned strike and support ongoing talks for lasting peace in the education sector.
