The League of Imams and Alfas in Ogun State has urged the Federal Government to resolve the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), warning that the disruption of the academic calendar is pushing young people into crime, drug abuse, and other social vices.In a statement on Monday, the Secretary of the League, Imam Tajudeen Adewunmi, said the prolonged strike was undermining education, weakening national productivity, and eroding citizens’ trust in public institutions. He urged the government to engage ASUU in sincere dialogue and resolve the lingering issues surrounding the 2009 agreement.“The frequent disruptions in universities make students idle, burden parents financially, and damage the nation’s global competitiveness,” Adewunmi said. He added that the strikes also fuel brain drain and cripple small businesses around campuses.The group appealed for a permanent solution through fair remuneration for lecturers, improved infrastructure, and funding for research. It also urged ASUU to embrace dialogue, noting that continuous strikes only deepen students’ suffering.Recall that ASUU had earlier declared a two-week warning strike to press home its demands for improved welfare and revitalisation of universities.
