The Federal Government says it has committed more than ₦90 billion to support over 400,000 students across Nigeria’s tertiary institutions through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).
Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris disclosed this in Abuja on Wednesday during a meeting with state commissioners of information.
The fund, launched by President Bola Tinubu, is aimed at expanding access to higher education and easing financial pressures on students and their families. It provides assistance with tuition and living allowances to prevent students from dropping out of their studies due to economic hardship.
According to government data, as of August 6 2025, disbursements had reached ₦86.3 billion. About ₦47.6 billion was allocated to institutional fees across 218 schools, while ₦38.7 billion went directly to students. The platform has received 788,842 applications to date, with 780,089 students registered and 449,039 beneficiaries approved.
Idris said the initiative was part of efforts to ensure no Nigerian of school age is denied higher education. He added that the programme is designed to benefit students irrespective of political or religious affiliation.
