The Federal Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the National Commission for UNESCO, has requested increased investment in climate-resilient Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) to promote sustainability and protect students’ well-being.
Mrs. Obianuju Anigbogu, the Ministry’s Director of Educational Planning, Research, and Development, was represented by Mrs. Juliet Uzor, Director of Educational Planning, who requested a workshop in Abuja on Monday, Jun. 16 2025. The event, themed “The Impact of Climate Change on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in Nigerian Educational Institutions,” focused on solving the challenges posed by poor climate conditions and poor WASH infrastructure in schools.
Anigbogu noted that the workshop will encourage collaboration with other groups and generate policies that align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.
“With just five years to the 2030 deadline, the time to act is now.”
Onyinyenchi Livinus, a student at Government Secondary School, Ushafa, shared her challenges with water usage and sanitation. She said, “Our toilet has no water supply. We fetch water from a pump located a considerable distance away. The junior and primary sections use the same pump. We do not have proper hand washing basins, so we use plastic bowls and rubber with taps. Even our drinking water is fetched from the pump and transferred into dispensers.”
