Federal University Lokoja to Launch 1.72 MW Solar Project

Federal University Lokoja (FUL) will begin using a 1.72 Megawatt solar power system in May 2025. This is one of the significant successes of the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi. The World Bank and the African Development Bank fund the project. It will supply power to the entire campus, helping the university reduce its reliance on public electricity.

During a visit to the site on April 24, members of the university Senate praised the project’s scale and impact. Professor Akinwumi said the project had been years in the making and would benefit students and staff for generations to come. He also advised the next Vice-Chancellor to build staff housing, stating that it is essential for attracting the best workers. The university Senate agreed and praised Akinwumi for his leadership. The solar power project will serve as an example for other universities, demonstrating that FUL is committed to utilising clean energy and increasing its self-sufficiency.
