Prof. Siyan Oyeweso, the late Pro-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU)
Prof. Taiwo Olaiya, Chairman of the Governing Council of The Federal Polytechnic, Ede, Osun, has described the death of Prof. Siyan Oyeweso, Pro-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, as a significant loss to the nation.
Speaking at Oyeweso’s eighth-day fidau prayer in Ede, Olaiya praised the late scholar’s contributions as a historian, bridge builder, and mentor who inspired young people to embrace African culture and language globally. Oyeweso also served as Provost of the College of Postgraduate Studies, Osun State University.
Olaiya said, “The passing of ‘Baapitan of Lagos’ is a huge personal and national loss. He was always ready to support and handle matters with urgency.” He recalled years of close collaboration and lauded Oyeweso’s dedication to education and leadership.
On behalf of the 7th Governing Council, staff, and students of The Federal Polytechnic, Ede, Olaiya, we extend our condolences to the Timi of Ede, Oba Munirudeen Lawal, OAU management, and all affected communities.
Prof. Oyeweso passed away on December 2, 2025, after a brief illness, leaving a legacy of scholarship, mentorship and cultural advocacy.
