UNIMAID Hosts Workshop on Conflict Reporting

The University of Maiduguri Language Centre, in collaboration with the North East Development Commission (NEDC), organised a two-day workshop from December 8-9, 2025, to enhance accurate conflict reporting through effective translation and interpretation.

Held at the Muhammadu Indimi International Conference Centre, the workshop brought together language experts, journalists, and humanitarian workers.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mohammed Laminu Mele, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic Services), Professor Mohammed Ahmed Waziri, highlighted the crucial role of language in conflict resolution and the University’s commitment to regional development.

Professor Jidda Hassan Juma’a, Director of the Language Centre, stressed that language can either escalate tensions or foster peace, noting the workshop’s relevance in conflict-prone areas. He expressed gratitude to the University management, facilitators, and partners for their support.

Guest speaker Professor Nuhu Dariso Gapsiso from the Department of Mass Communication discussed the impact of translation and interpretation on conflict, humanitarian, and medical reporting. He addressed challenges, shared best practices, and emphasised the importance of timely and accurate information in conflict situations.

The initiative aims to strengthen professionals’ capacity to deliver precise, impactful reporting that supports peacebuilding and humanitarian response in the North East.
